If you're on benefits
Housing benefit covers all of your eligible rent. Housing benefit may be reduced if another person lives with you.
From April 2013 the government will only pay housing benefit based on your needs. You should make sure you're applying for a property that's the right size.
If you're not on benefits
The amount of housing benefit depends on your income, capital, age, whether you have a partner or children, or whether you are disabled or care for a disabled person. Find out more on the Directgov website.
What happens if I don't pay my rent?
If you don't pay you rent you could lose your home. If you're evicted it affects your credit rating and reduces your ability to secure future credit. It also reduces the likelihood of being offered alternative housing.
You'll have the following costs to consider:
- Household bills
- Rent
- Council tax
- Water rates
- Television licence
- Home contents insurance
- Gas and electricity (depending on the heating type in the property).
