A name has been revealed for a new state-of-the-art leisure centre in Eastleigh, which will be managed by Places for People Leisure.
The £25m facility, that replaces Fleming Park Leisure Centre, will be called Places Leisure Eastleigh.
The venue, located within the town's popular Fleming Park next to the site of the old building, will open towards the end of this year, with a firm date announced in the coming weeks.
The opening of Places Leisure Eastleigh has given operators, Places for People Leisure - who agreed the naming rights as part of their lease to operate the centre for the next 20 years - an opportunity to showcase its brand in what is destined to become a flagship facility for the social enterprise.
The partnership with Places for People Leisure generates a guaranteed income stream for Eastleigh Borough Council who developed the new centre. The deal means that the venue's construction comes at no cost to local council tax payers and is an example of Eastleigh Borough Council's nationally recognised asset management programme that generates £5.5 million a year towards local services.
The additional naming rights funding from Places for People Leisure will be coupled with in kind support annually to deliver health and wellbeing projects that underpin the Council's ambitions for healthy communities across the Borough. The naming rights funding will be ringfenced for the Council's pioneering HealthWorks team, who provide healthy lifestyle advice and assessments to target groups within the Borough. The team will be based at a new purpose-built health hub within the new leisure centre.
Co-funded by Sport England, who contributed £2 million to the scheme, Places Leisure Eastleigh includes among other facilities, an eight-lane 25-metre swimming pool (an increase from six lanes), a larger learner pool with an adjustable floor depth, and a 15-badminton court sports hall (one of the largest in the south), together with spacious fitness suites, studios and a café that opens onto Fleming Park.
Leader of Eastleigh Borough Council, Councillor Keith House
"We have had an excellent partnership with Places for People Leisure over the years and look forward to working with them to make Places Leisure Eastleigh a success for residents of the Borough and users from across the region. Our commercial arrangement, including the naming rights, means that the centre will be run at no cost to the Borough's council tax payers and will generate income that helps pay for frontline services."
