A topping out ceremony has been held at the new Egham Leisure Centre in Surrey to celebrate the construction of the building reaching its highest point which stands at just over 11m.
The £19m venue is being developed by Places for People on behalf of Runnymede Borough Council as part of the £200m long-term Runnymede Regeneration Programme. Achieve Lifestyle will manage the centre as the council’s leisure operator.
Representatives from Runnymede Borough Council, Places for People, Pellikaan Construction and Achieve Lifestyle marked the occasion with a tour of the site up to the roof level of the new building.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Mayor of Runnymede, Councillor Mrs Dolsie Clarke said, “Everybody is very excited about the swimming pool. It’s just a fantastic building and I’m very excited to see it open for the community.”
Works on the leisure centre are well underway with the building almost wind and water tight, and the pools and spa pool nearing completion. Installation of the pool windows will soon begin, using 75 panels of glass with the largest panel measuring 1.2m x 2.7m.
The next milestone in the construction includes installation of the internal walls which will start to show how the leisure centre will look when it is finished.
Once complete, the new facility will boast a 25m, eight lane swimming pool and spectator seating, a 10mx10m learner pool and splash area, a two-storey health spa with sauna, steam room, a relaxation area, and a range of wet and dry treatment rooms.
The centre will also include a four court multi-use sports hall, 110-station fitness suite with three studios and an indoor cycling studio.
A café will sit alongside the crèche and a double height adventure play area.
The area outside the new centre will be landscaped and developed for enhanced community use to complement the existing 3G five-a-side football pitches.
Rick Lawrence, Partnerships Director at Places for People said, “We are delighted to be celebrating this key milestone as we look to deliver this new state-of-the-art leisure centre for Runnymede. This is an exciting step in the regeneration programme which will see several sites redeveloped over the coming years, including investment in Egham town centre.
Hazel Aitken, Chief Executive of Achieve Lifestyle added, "With the building reaching its highest point it clearly indicates the realisation of this new fantastic community leisure facility. This important milestone in the construction recognises the increasing redevelopment within Egham and the wider area, and we are confident that the new centre known as Egham Orbit will raise the bar in relation to facility leisure development and operational excellence, and we look forward to the spring of 2019 when the centre will open to the public.
