Customers from across England and Scotland have been recognised as ‘Good Neighbours’ in our annual Good Neighbour Awards.
Now in its tenth year, the Good Neighbour Awards recognise residents who put people first, celebrating the positive impact they make in their local communities.
Normally we would welcome the winners to our annual awards event in York, but this year that wasn’t possible due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rather than let the enormous efforts of those who have gone above and beyond to make their neighbourhoods great go unnoticed, our unsung heroes received their award, together with gift vouchers and a thank you message from Group Chief Executive, David Cowans and Executive Director of Affordable Housing, Debi Marriott-Lavery.
This year, there were 256 nominations, with awards delivered to 60 of our customers for activities such as running community initiatives, checking in on older and vulnerable neighbours, shopping, gardening and raising spirits during lockdown.
Group Chief Executive, David Cowans, said: “The Places for People Group has always supported the Good Neighbour Awards and this is our tenth year of doing so. The current pandemic means we can’t do it in our normal way, but it was important to mark the occasion in recognition of our customers who have such a positive impact in their communities.”
On receiving his award, Barry, a Places Homes customer in Stourton, said: “I was really surprised to win this award, so when it arrived it was a nice surprise. It feels nice to be recognised for something.”
Debi Marriot-Lavery, Executive Director of Affordable Housing, added: “I want to thank those people who’ve come out and helped their neighbours. This year we’ve had a record amount of nominations, which I think reflects what we’ve all been dealing with during the pandemic.
“We want to now reach out to all of you and say keep nominating. Tell us about your neighbours who help you and make your life better. Make sure they get the recognition they deserve and let’s make 2021 an even better year than 2020.”
