Help with getting online

From October 2013, all Universal Credit claims need to be made online. This could cause problems for anyone without easy internet access.

If you know a friend or family member who would benefit from getting online, here's a guide to help them get started. Print this page or show them on your laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Find an online centre

You can use the internet for free at an online centre. Some centres offer free training courses.

To find your nearest centre:

Find a Wi-Fi hotspot

If you have a tablet, laptop or smartphone with Wi-Fi you can take advantage of free wireless hotspots around the UK. Find your nearest Wi-Fi hotspots here.

Benefits of getting online

  • An average household could save up to £560 a year by shopping and paying bills online
  • 90% of jobs require basic internet skills. People with good ICT skills can earn up to 10% more than people without such skills
  • Being online can combat social isolation and loneliness. This is often experienced by 3.1 million over 65 year olds who see a friend, relative or neighbour less than once a week.
