Spring is in the air and you may be thinking about getting your garden ready for the outdoor season. You can keep costs as low as possible by looking out for second hand equipment, doing some of the work yourself or getting creative and upcycling.

If you’re planning a larger project, getting a small loan could help you spread the cost of any improvements.

Here are some of our gardening tips:

Cheap gardening equipment

Garden equipment like lawnmowers, strimmers and jet washers can be expensive if you buy them brand new. You might find pre-loved items on local selling boards or sites such as ebay or freecycle.

Invest in a shed

Sheds are a great way to store your garden equipment and tools securely, particularly if you don’t have a garage. You may need to get a small loan to cover the initial cost if you’re buying new.

It’s worth a look on Gumtree too. Some people give away sheds for free if you’re able to dismantle and move them.

Check your tenancy agreement

If you rent your property, chances are your contract will require you to keep your garden clean and tidy. With the weather improving, now is the perfect time to spruce up your garden.

You’ll find lots of budget stores like Home Bargains and B&M offer reasonably priced garden tools to help you get the job done, or why not see if you can borrow some gardening essentials from a friend?

Improve your garden for free

Ever thought of upcycling palettes to make outdoor furniture? Or making your own lanterns from tin cans? If you get creative, you can make lots of improvements to your garden for free! You’ll find plenty of inspiration and how-to guides on Pinterest.

Look out for discount corners at local garden centres too, where you can often pick up plants for as little as £1.00.

Repair wear and tear

The winter weather can take its toll on your garden. Don’t be surprised if a fence panel or two need replacing. Talk to neighbours to see if they are willing to split the cost with you. Painting on a wood treatment is easy to do yourself and will prolong the life of your fence too.

Remember, if you need a loan for garden equipment, we may be able to help. We look at applications on an individual basis, taking into account your personal circumstances. We'll consider you even if you have a less than perfect credit history.
