The next royal baby is due any time and excitement is building in the media. A new baby in the family can be magical, but for many it can bring financial worries too.

We’ve put together our best advice for keeping costs down whilst making sure your own little prince or princess doesn’t miss out.

Don’t buy brand new

Babies grow out of clothes quickly, which means second-hand baby clothes are often nearly new. Search for baby sales in your area and check Facebook buy and sell pages that are local to you. Cheeki Monkeys hold nearly-new sales across the UK, or check if your local NCT are holding a sale.

Ask around too – often people will be selling bags of baby toys, clothes and even prams for low prices.

Join baby clubs

Sign up for clubs especially for new parents and you’re likely to get free samples, advice and exclusive vouchers for top brands. Boots parenting club promises free gifts at key stages of your baby's development, and C&G baby club gives you a free cuddly toy.

If you download the Bounty app you’ll get a Bounty pack containing free samples and information.

Make your own baby food

Jars and pouches of baby food can be expensive. It’s quick and easy to make your own, plus you know exactly what ingredients are used. NHS Start4Life has lots of recipes for babies from 6 months and up.

Check what you’re entitled to

If you’re on certain benefits, you might be able to get free milk, infant formula, vitamins, fruit and vegetables from the NHS Healthy Start website.

You could also get a one-off payment of £500 from the government to help towards the costs of having a child. Check their website for more details about the Sure Start Maternity Grant.

Shop around

If you use disposable nappies, you’ll find they’re one of your biggest costs. Website Bumdeal specialises in comparing nappy prices and deals.
