Adaptations to a property can assist with daily living and improve quality of life.

There are two kinds of adaptations: minor and major.

Minor adaptations

Minor adaptations (up to the cost of £2,500) are small items such as:

  • Grab rails
  • Lever taps
  • Bathroom rails.

Places for People will cover the cost of this work and our own contractors will carry out the work.

Major adaptations

Major adaptations include:

  • level access showers
  • stair lifts
  • Adapted kitchens.

These get referred to your Local Authority for an Occupational Therapy assessment.

An approved adaptation may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant. These grants are means tested and you may need to pay for some of the work yourself.

What you need to do

If you are not funding the adaptation yourself you will need to:

  • Provide medical evidence to support your adaptation
  • For major adaptations, contact your Local Authority for an Occupational Therapy assessment
  • Send the information to our Business Support Unit.
