Volunteers’ Week is about celebrating and thanking people who give up their time to make a difference. Across Places for People, our colleagues are involved in volunteering to support our own customers but also to support good causes in their own communities.
Marcus Hulme, Director of Social Value at Places for People, has shared how we volunteer across the Group.
Places for People volunteers
Over the past year, our colleagues have delivered 1,176 hours of volunteer work. One of example of this comes from our colleagues at Group company Touchstone, who visited Cambodia in November to help build a house as part of their partnership with Habitat for Humanity.
Our colleagues from the Procurement Hub and Places Management also supported the BBC Children in Need’s DIY SOS Special to transform a rundown church. Materials and labour were provided to transform it into accommodation and a support centre for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 24 which is now run by a local charity.
We have also been supporting the Silver Surfers club in Hackney Wick through our joint venture with Balfour Beatty at East Wick and Sweetwater. Staff across Balfour Beatty, Group company TILA and colleagues from the Group have volunteered at the club to help support older people develop digital skills including downloading apps to help them communicate with their loved ones, and to help them access key information such as bus timetables.
Help during the Covid-19 crisis
Our colleagues have also been supporting others through the current crisis. One colleague from the Places Development Team is currently running a foodbank from his home to support families who are struggling to afford food.
This foodbank hub is now busier than ever and has received donations to respond to the increasing need from supermarkets, local businesses and neighbours. Places for People are also supporting the foodbank through a grant from the Community Investment Fund.
