Apprenticeships for all: How Dean Wall is expanding opportunities in the housing sector

Apprenticeships are for everyone – not just school-leavers.
Whether you’re entering the sector, reskilling in the middle of your career, or moving into a leadership position, an apprenticeship can give you hands-on experience, structured learning, and a real sense of ownership from day one.
At PfP Thrive, we see People from all backgrounds and career journeys enrolling on our apprenticeships. It’s something that Dean Wall, Director of Housing Services at Torus, hugely advocates for.
When he began his apprenticeship in Housing Management with Jigsaw Homes, Dean was eager to learn but naturally apprehensive about what the future held. Fast forward to the present, the apprenticeship is a key part of what helped him grow into his current role, which sees him responsible for his own team and thousands of homes across the Northwest of England.
“My apprenticeship was a game-changer for my professional development, it’s set the foundation for everything that’s followed in my career.”
Now, Dean wants to champion apprenticeships as a route into the housing sector, helping to secure its future by encouraging fresh talent to experience all an apprenticeship has to offer.
“To anyone looking for a career with purpose, progression, and real responsibility, housing offers all of that and more. The sector is about way more than buildings and bricks; it’s about Communities, the People they serve, and the teams that make it happen.”
Dean notes that curiosity, resilience, and adaptability helped him succeed during his apprenticeship journey, and he wants future apprentices to embrace the same traits.
“I remember being asked to take on tasks that felt completely outside of my comfort zone. Instead of shying away, I leaned into those challenges, with a productive mindset of learning as I go, which has served me well throughout my career.”
“You’ll encounter experiences that push you out of your comfort zone, and those are the moments where real growth happens.”
This support has driven Dean to partner with PfP Thrive to create apprenticeship routes into social housing.
“Apprenticeships are a great choice for anyone who wants to earn and learn at the same time. For employers, apprenticeships provide a pipeline of skilled, motivated talent who understand the work, the People, and the purpose behind what they do. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
At PfP Thrive, we’re proud to offer a variety of apprenticeships which blend industry-recognised qualifications with hands-on training. It’s a great way for apprentices to be presented with real-life scenarios they may experience at work.
As Dean leads the way, he wants to inspire People and unlock their potential, making sure everyone feels part of the journey.
“Understanding People’s needs and building trust is the foundation of any successful relationship. Today, being able to communicate clearly and empathetically is one of the most important skills I have.”
For Dean, apprenticeships aren’t just a first step, they open doors, build confidence and spark long-term careers. He’s seen it for himself.
“I look back on my early apprentice role with great memories. No matter the career stage you’re at, an apprenticeship can shape who you are, both as a person and as a teammate. Especially in a sector which makes a real difference to the quality of People’s lives.
“It’s a privilege to help guide the next generation for any leader, I’d encourage anyone considering it to take that step, you won’t regret it!”
Dean’s journey shows how apprenticeships are creating confident leaders who are not only strengthening the housing sector but making new opportunities for future generations.
