How apprenticeships create leaders: Niall Clark’s story

Starting out in any career can feel like stepping into the unknown, but for many apprentices, that first step opens doors they never expected.

What begins as hands-on training can soon become a pathway to new opportunities, new skills, and a future that’s rich in experience.

That’s exactly how Niall Clark’s career journey has panned out. Now Managing Director of Rykneld Homes, he has continually embraced the opportunities presented to him throughout his career.

Encouraged by his parents to learn a trade, he started an apprenticeship with the goal of becoming an electrician.

“My apprenticeship was the perfect introduction into the trade, blending real life experience with learning, which is a combination I consider more valuable than qualifications alone."

"An apprenticeship opens a lot of avenues for the future. For me, I was inspired by the engineers, managers and technical staff doing interesting and varied work around me.”

Niall now says his apprenticeship was invaluable in shaping his career.

The high-quality, technical work he learned to deliver and the strong work ethic he built have become a driving force in how he approaches every new opportunity that comes his way.

“I think it’s important to diversify your knowledge and skills throughout your career, taking side steps and remaining willing to learn.”

Niall’s journey has now come full circle, as he’s supporting PfP Thrive, and is helping to champion apprenticeship pathways into social housing.

Just like Niall has said, we believe that apprenticeships are more than training programmes, they’re powerful opportunities to build skills and grow careers. We proudly offer a wide range of apprenticeships across trades and professions, including electrics, housing, and leadership & management.

“Organisations such as PfP Thrive are doing a stellar job of supporting
apprenticeships. In the housing industry, practical application is everything. Nothing is better than being on the job, learning in real life situations, and growing in confidence as a result.”

Another great thing about apprenticeships is that you can earn while you learn. You get the mix of learning and practical experience, all while being able to support yourself – it’s the best of both worlds.

“The most important skill I developed on my apprenticeship was being self-reliant. I’ve been fortunate to work with great staff and Colleagues, but I am responsible for my work ethic, attitude, and the decisions I make daily. I think it’s important to take ownership of that and lead by example.”

Looking back, Niall wouldn’t change a single part of his journey, and it’s easy to see why. His apprenticeship set him up for success, and the leadership role he’s in now is something he’s genuinely proud of and enjoys every day.
