Skills for Life in action: How Georgina’s apprenticeship is powering a confident career change
10 February 2026
As we mark National Apprenticeship Week and its theme of Skills for Life, it’s the perfect time to celebrate how apprenticeships are helping People build lasting careers through hands-on learning, real-world experience and meaningful progression.
Across housing and construction, apprenticeships are creating pathways that strengthen Communities, support Colleagues to grow, and deliver better outcomes for Customers - all while tackling critical skills shortages.
At PfP Thrive, we see this transformation every day. Georgina Campbell-Holmes is one of the many People whose career has been reshaped through an apprenticeship — proving it’s never too late to learn new skills, change direction and build a future you’re proud of.
Having started her electronics apprenticeship last September, Georgina’s journey is rooted in curiosity, problem solving and a love of practical work.
“I’ve always loved building things and figuring out problems - there’s a real sense of accomplishment when you can make or fix something - it’s always been in me to do this kind of analytical but practical type of work.”
That natural drive led Georgina into the housing sector, where she now works for Clarion Housing Group - combining real-world experience with structured learning through her apprenticeship.
“I work for a social housing group Clarion. I've been in my role for two years and was fortunate to start a multi trade apprenticeship while working, giving me hands-on experience in several trades like carpentry, bricklaying, plastering, painting, tiling, basic plumbing/electrics, alongside essential health and safety, teamwork, and communication skills.
It’s exposed me to all elements of the industry. I work really hard and am proud to say I have already earned a distinction – giving me the confidence to pursue this as a career.”
For Georgina, the breadth of experience has been invaluable — but it’s the electrical pathway that’s truly sparked her passion.
“The electrical side appeals most to me. I feel like it’s a great career choice and will always serve me well. I am really drawn to the problem solving element of it and the methodical nature of the work.”
And it’s PfP Thrive’s learning environment that’s helped turn that passion into real progress.
“It's what’s so good about joining the PfP Thrive programme; being able to get hands-on experience in a custom-built facility which provides us with everything we need to really excel in this field.
The other huge benefit is being paid to learn something you love while gaining invaluable experience and support along the way, it’s the perfect scenario for me.”
Beyond technical skills, Georgina highlights the People around her as a key part of her success - from tutors to fellow apprentices, all creating a supportive and confidence-building environment.
“I’ve also met some fantastic people at PfP Thrive, each with an amazing level of knowledge that they are happy to share. As an older apprentice (include age) this meant a great deal and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn a new skill that I can take with me for the rest of my life.”
That support continues in the classroom and workshop, where mentorship plays a huge role in helping apprentices thrive.
“My tutor is absolutely fantastic. I was a little nervous starting the course, but he put me at ease immediately with his patience and passion for the trade. He’s excellent at explaining things, with the incredible set up at the academy aiding our learning with practical experience.”
Georgina’s apprenticeship also marks a bold and inspiring career change - showing just how powerful Skills for Life can be at any stage.
"Before this, I worked in childcare for a decade and, as much as I enjoyed it at the time, after running my own nursery, there was no-where left to go. I think that’s why I love the nature of practical work and learning through the apprenticeship, I’m building my knowledge, and continuing to discover new things.”
Alongside her professional growth, Georgina is supported by a busy and joyful life outside work too.
“Outside of work I’m supported by my lovely wife, and welcomed home every day by our cockapoo Bonnie, and crazy ginger girl cat Ziggy. I play rounders and - as of yet we’re undefeated after two seasons, moving from division five to division three - I’m very much looking forward to next season.”
And when it comes to the apprenticeship experience itself, Georgina is clear about the impact it’s had - both professionally and personally.
“My apprenticeship is fantastic and I’m looking forward to continuing to learn all I can. I would highly recommend this route, especially to anyone who struggles with solely learning in a classroom environment. The hands-on experience is second to none.”
