The apprentice who’s now giving back: how Lucy’s experience is shaping future apprenticeship talent
25 March 2026
Like many 16-year-olds, Lucy Gebbie kept being asked the classic question: “What do you want to be when you’re older?”.
It’s a question most of us face in our teenage years - but so few of us know the answer to at the time. After all, we’re still discovering what we enjoy, what we’re good at, and what we want our future to look like at that age.
Lucy was ready to work hard, but she didn’t have a clear path she wanted to go down. That’s why it felt right to do an apprenticeship.
Not only did it take the pressure off having everything mapped out, it gave her the chance to earn while she learned, explore potential career options, and see what suited her. Instead of guessing what suited her, she got a first-hand experience of it.
Looking back, Lucy says that her apprenticeship didn’t just give her skills, it boosted her mindset and set the course for her entire career journey.
“Apprenticeships play a fundamental role in shaping what your career can become. They give you the opportunity to learn in a real working environment, developing both technical skills and the mindset needed to succeed.
"Traditional academic routes aren’t right for everyone. Apprenticeships offer a powerful alternative, which is the chance to learn on the job, build confidence, and prove that being less academically inclined doesn’t limit your potential.”
Lucy soon landed a role in HR, picking up a strong set of qualifications across finance, leadership, and business as she progressed throughout the sector.
Now, she’s the Director of Corporate Resources at Rykneld Homes, drawing on decades of experience to inspire the next generation of apprentices.
It’s a mission that PfP Thrive champions too. Our apprenticeships are more than just training programmes, they help People build skills, get real-life work experience, and grow.
“PfP Thrive offers a great succession pathway. It’s so important to recognise talent and have the resources to nurture that within your organisation.”
As somebody who deeply cares about apprenticeships and career paths, Lucy has some pointers on what both apprentices and organisations should pay attention to.
“A proactive approach and strong work ethic are essential, but so too is being in an environment that supports your development as an individual, not just your job title.”
“Effective People management matters above all else. You can’t underestimate the importance of opportunistic conversations, finding a good mentor or line manager, or being in the right place at the right time.”
Lucy’s career marks a bold and inspiring journey – both personally and professionally.
Now, her passion for learning and professional development is only getting stronger.
Next up on Lucy’s list is completing a Level 7 qualification from Chartered Institute Management (CMI), before she makes a start on gaining a Level 5 qualification from Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) – showing just how powerful skills for life can be at any stage.
If there's one thing Lucy stands by, it's this:
“With hard work, and a little luck thrown in, you can achieve anything.”
