Guy's learning journey - Diploma in Housing Level 5

As Chief Executive of Gloucester City Homes, Guy Stenson is responsible for leading an organisation and helping shape its future. But despite being in a senior leadership role, he believes learning should never stop.
Guy first became aware of the programme through Colleagues in the sector and by seeing the impact that professional development can have on People. Seeing one of GCH's own apprentices thriving after engaging with PfP gave him confidence in both the quality of the learning and the support available, leading him to enrol on the CIH level 5 Diploma in Housing.
"I think it's important to lead by example. As a CEO, if I'm encouraging Colleagues to invest in their development, I need to be prepared to do the same myself."
For Guy, the decision wasn't just about gaining a qualification. It was an opportunity to stay curious, challenge his thinking and continue growing as a leader.
Learning from experience
Having worked across both operational and executive leadership roles within housing, Guy brought a wealth of experience to the programme. This allowed him to connect theory with real-life examples from his own career and gain fresh perspectives on the challenges facing the sector.
One of the aspects he valued most was the opportunity to learn alongside other housing professionals, exploring different approaches to leadership and decision-making.
"The most valuable aspect has been the opportunity to come together with others, share experiences, explore ideas and make connections across the sector."
The programme also encouraged reflection, helping Guy think differently about situations he was navigating in his day-to-day role.
He found that many of the models and frameworks could be applied directly to real workplace challenges, offering tried and tested insights rather than purely academic learning.
"The programme is grounded in ethics, values and behaviours, but it does so in a very practical way that relates directly to the real challenges housing professionals face every day."
Support that makes a difference
Balancing learning alongside the demands of leading an organisation is no small task, but Guy found the programme both well organised and well supported.
"Whenever I’ve needed support, guidance or reassurance, the PfP Thrive team have always been there. The programme feels well-structured and well supported, which makes a real difference when you're trying to balance learning alongside a busy role."
Challenging thinking and looking ahead
While the programme has strengthened Guy's knowledge of the housing sector, its biggest impact has been the way it has challenged his thinking as a leader.
It encouraged him to reflect not only on the decisions he makes, but also the behaviours he role models and the influence those behaviours have on organisational culture.
"It has encouraged me to think more deeply about the context of my role, the organisation I lead and, most importantly, the impact my decisions have on the lives of the people around me."
For Guy, the learning journey has been as much about personal growth as professional development.

Guy's advice to anyone considering professional learning is simple:
"Do it. Throw yourself into it. Be curious. Use it as an opportunity to broaden your horizons, challenge your thinking and reflect on your own practice."
He is also realistic about the commitment involved.
"You do need to carve out time and protect that time if you're going to do the programme justice. But if you commit to it, engage with it and stay open to being challenged, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by how much you get out of it."
