With the government-backed Shared Ownership scheme, you can step on the housing ladder for less by purchasing a 10-75% share of a brand-new home. Your deposit and mortgage are lower than normal because they’re based on the share you buy not the full property price, so you can move sooner. You pay a subsidised rent on the share you don’t own, but the combined costs tend to be less than renting privately. You can also ‘staircase’ – increasing your share as finances allow.
