Before you start

There are two kinds of adaptations: minor and major.

Minor adaptations

Minor adaptations are small items such as:

  • grab rails
  • lever taps
  • half steps and rails

Places for People will cover the cost of this work and our own contractors will carry out the work. Multiple minor adaptations may made on a single home up to the value of £1,000.

Major adaptations

Major adaptations include:

  • level access showers
  • stair lifts
  • adapted kitchens

To begin the process, you will need to arrange an Occupational Therapy (OT) assessment by contacting your local Social Services department. This can be done either online or by phone.

If the OT determines that you require major adaptations to your home, they will refer your case to your Local Authority for further assessment. Approved adaptations may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG).

Please note, these grants are means-tested, and you may be required to contribute towards the cost of the work.

Places for People must provide consent before any work can proceed. In some cases, we may not be able to grant permission, either because the home cannot be technically adapted or because adaptations are not suitable for the home.

How long will it take?

Once we have received all relevant information, we will review the case and provide a decision within 28 days. Approval will be issued to the local authority, who will then manage the work directly with their appointed contractors.

The OT will refer the case to us once funding has been approved, and we will deliver the work using their own contractors.
