Because of Community, I turned homelessness into hope

When you speak to Daniel Carver, now a Customer Contact Centre Advisor at Places for People, you’d never guess the challenges he’s faced. He’s warm, chatty, and quick to laugh - but that outlook comes from lived experience. Daniel knows what it feels like to lose everything, and how it feels to slowly build life back up again.
In his early twenties, Daniel’s life fell apart. “My whole life just came crashing down in a very short series of events. My relationship broke down, my family had to move suddenly, and because I was over 18, I wasn’t included in that move. Suddenly, I had nowhere to go.”
Sadly, Daniel’s experience is not unusual - many young People find themselves in a similar position when they turn 18 and the support they once relied on is suddenly taken away.
At the last moment, he found space in a homeless shelter.
“It was very scary, because when you get told you’re about to be homeless, it’s surreal. At first, I thought, I’ll be sleeping on a park bench. I felt ashamed and didn’t want my friends to know.”
That time in the shelter became a turning point. Surrounded by People who cared, Daniel found strength in connection.
“Getting into a homeless shelter really helped, because I wasn’t alone. There was Pat, Christine, Sarah - People who worked there and kept me going without even knowing it. And then there were the other residents. I still think very fondly of Lyndsay and Sheralee and the others. They became part of my Community.”
Daniel knew he needed something to focus on to keep moving forward. “I set myself goals - I carried on with my studies because I needed something to do. Without that structure and sense of Community, I don’t think I would have made it out the other end as intact as I did.”
After leaving the shelter, he decided he needed a fresh start. Moving to Ipswich, where he was born, gave him a chance to see the world differently.
“Ipswich opened my eyes. I met so many different People - People from all backgrounds, all walks of life. Seeing People just living their lives, happy and free, completely changed my outlook on life.”
From there, Daniel began to rebuild. He tried Community radio, gained new qualifications, and went to university to study Film & Media where he went on to gain his Masters.
“Being homeless was the start of a very long journey of self-discovery. It taught me that if I could get through that, I could get through almost anything - exams, therapy, university. I used that resilience to keep moving forward.”
Today, Daniel brings that resilience and perspective into his role at PfP. He’s been with the company for three years and says he’s found a role that truly suits him. “I love my job because I get to help People and solve problems. “Many of the calls I take are from Customers who need support with an issue. I know from my own experience how it feels to be stuck and not know where to turn. That’s why I make sure People feel heard - because I remember how much it meant when someone did that for me.”
For Daniel, the most important lesson has been the power of connection. “You can’t assume anything about someone. You don’t know their story. That’s what homelessness taught me - and that’s why I value Community so much. Human beings aren’t meant to isolate themselves. We’re meant to connect.”
His story has come full circle - from crisis to stability, and now to helping others. His message to anyone facing homelessness is filled with hope:
“Don’t cut yourself off. It’s tempting to isolate yourself, but Community is what will get you through. Seek out support, set yourself small goals, and believe that you are worth something - because you are. Homelessness is temporary, and you can get through it.”
Looking back, Daniel is proud of how far he’s come but remains humble. “I never wanted to be famous,” he says with a smile. “I just wanted a quiet life. But if my story can help someone else believe they can get through it, then that’s enough for me.”
Daniel’s story is an uplifting and inspirational journey. However, these circumstances are all too common.
