Places for People celebrates funding boost for Wee Haven Community Garden
23 June 2026
The impact of a new welcoming space for the Craigmillar community has been recognised with funding from the SafeDeposits Scotland Community Fund.
The Wee Haven Community Garden at Hays Community Hub, which is run and managed by UK leading social enterprise, Places for People, will benefit from a £2500 grant to help support the next stage of its development.
The garden, which officially opened to the public last week, gives local people a welcoming space to grow food, learn new skills and spend time together.
Run with and for the community, Wee Haven is much more than just a garden. It’s a place for neighbours to meet, friendships to grow and for people of all ages to build confidence, pick up practical skills and feel part of something positive in their area.
The funding will help more local people get involved – whether that’s through growing, volunteering, or simply enjoying a shared green space on their doorstep.
Katie Brash, Community Engagement Worker for Places for People Scotland, said:
“Wee Haven is a brilliant example of what can happen when local people come together. It’s about building confidence, connections and a real sense of belonging and this funding will help us open the space up to even more people and build on what the community has already created.”
The Hays Community Hub, where the garden is based, hosts a wide range of activities and support for local residents, from learning opportunities to wellbeing sessions. It provides a welcoming space where people can access support, develop new skills and become involved in community life. The garden will become a key part of that, offering a hands-on way for people to connect with nature and each other.
The SafeDeposits Scotland Community Fund supports projects that make a real difference at a local level, promote sustainability, social inclusion and stronger local communities. It is made available by SafeDeposits Scotland, the country’s only not-for-profit tenancy deposit protection scheme.
Carol Bradburn, Head of SafeDeposits Scotland said: “We are delighted to be able to support the growth of the Wee Haven Community Garden, which we know will become a valued part of the community. This award recognises the importance of grassroots community development and the role that local green spaces can play in tackling social isolation, promoting wellbeing and supporting environmental sustainability.”
As the garden continues to grow, local volunteers will remain at its heart – helping to shape its future and ensure it stays a welcoming, inclusive space for everyone in the community.
