Places for People builds on success in North East by bringing further new homes to South Shields

Places For People Brings Further New Homes To South Shields

Leading social enterprise, Places for People has set out plans to expand its already successful development portfolio by bringing more much-needed homes to South Shields in Tyne and Wear.

Located on Lord Nelson Street, this development is being built in partnership with South Tyneside Council and leading UK homebuilder, Keepmoat, and provides an excellent opportunity for the local community to benefit from a wide range of new homes available for social rent. This development marks a new milestone for Places for People and delivers on their ethos to provide what communities truly need.

“We are working hard to address local housing needs in this region, and we feel that we are making a real difference to communities across the North East... It’s rewarding to know that we are only building on this portfolio and that there are likely to be further exciting opportunities to come.”

Places for People is building a strong and successful presence in the North East, after recently becoming the new provider of council-run leisure services across Northumberland. The social enterprise has also worked to deliver housing for the local community already through the Smith’s Dock regeneration project, which is now entering its third phase, and will provide 409 new homes of mixed tenure upon completion of all phases. In addition to this, Places for People has been working in partnership with Adderstone Living to deliver Shaftesbury Avenue, a new development consisting of 69 affordable homes, and with Tandem Construction to deliver Nairn Street, a new development consisting of 14 affordable homes, both of which are just over a mile away from the new site on Lord Nelson Street.

The new development on Lord Nelson Street will deliver 66 affordable, social rent new homes, comprising a mix of 38 three-bedroom homes, and 28 two-bedroom homes. There will be three different house types which will be suitable for a range of residents.

Nilam Buchanan, Regional Managing Director, Central and North at Places for People, comments: “We are working hard to address local housing needs in this region, and we feel that we are making a real difference to communities across the North East. We are a placemaker that can be trusted by local residents to deliver in-demand homes that are exceptional and only enhance the already thriving areas. It’s rewarding to know that we are only building on this portfolio and that there are likely to be further exciting opportunities to come.”

Stuart Wright, Director of Place & Communities at South Tyneside Council, said: “This development will help breathe new life into this neighbourhood by replacing outdated council stock that was no longer fit for purpose for the kind of modern accommodation that families desire.

“The properties will be managed by one of our trusted partners, Places for People, and be for social rent, really boosting the affordable housing offer in the area.”

Ian Worgan, Regional Managing Director for Keepmoat North East, said: “We are thrilled to be working with South Tyneside Council and Places for People to deliver much needed housing in South Shields.

“In addition to delivering high quality new homes, Keepmoat is committed to developing thriving partnerships that prioritise creating much needed affordable homes for local people. At Keepmoat we believe homes are much more than just bricks and mortar, and we’re committed to supporting Places for People in its mission to create a fantastic new community in South Shields. We’re excited to get started on the development and build homes for people locally.’’
