A new initiative at Places for People’s (PfP) supported living scheme, The Limes in Ashford, is set to promote energy efficiency and healthy eating while strengthening social connections.

As we head towards the colder winter months, PfP, the UK’s leading social enterprise, will host monthly healthy eating sessions for residents.

Supported by funding from Stanhope Parish Council and a PfP microgrant, the sessions will provide each customer with an air fryer, with the sessions delivering practical cooking demonstrations, helping residents learn how to prepare nutritious meals affordably and efficiently.

To launch the programme, an Energy Advisor from PfP’s Places Impact team delivered an energy and digital inclusion workshop focusing on how air fryers can help reduce energy usage, as well as providing customers with some energy-saving items, digital support, and tips to help lower their household bills.

The monthly sessions will involve customers learning new recipes and incorporating fresh produce grown in the scheme’s communal planters - encouraging sustainable living and self-sufficiency.

Marcus Hulme, Director of Places Impact at Places for People, said: “This initiative is about more than just cooking, it’s about bringing people together, helping them feel more confident and independent, and supporting their wellbeing.

“It began with our customers telling us they’d value healthy eating sessions, and from that conversation, we’ve built something much bigger: a programme that supports healthier lifestyles, reduces energy costs, and strengthens digital inclusion.

“It’s a great example of how we listen to our customers and respond in ways that make a meaningful difference. By working with our partners and investing in practical support, we’re helping to create thriving communities where people feel connected, empowered, and supported - particularly during the winter months.”

This project is just one example of PfP’s wider commitment to delivering social impact across the UK. Last year alone, the organisation generated over £550 million in social value across its housing, leisure, and community programmes.

Parish Councillor Heather Hayward said: "Stanhope Parish Council is proud to support this initiative, which offers not only practical cooking skills but also promotes healthier eating, independence, and community connection. By helping to provide additional air fryers and ingredients, we hope to empower residents to cook affordable, nutritious meals and strengthen the sense of community within the project. It’s a small investment that we believe will make a meaningful difference to people's lives."

With 11 air fryers delivered for the launch, the programme is set to make a lasting impact - helping customers eat well, save money, and feel more connected to their community.
