Home from home: How Hyndland House and Friends International are uniting Communities
17 September 2025
At Hyndland House in Glasgow, Community isn’t just about where you live – it’s about feeling connected, supported, and part of something bigger. That’s why we’re proud to share the success of our partnership with Friends International, a Scotland-based organisation dedicated to welcoming and supporting international students.
Since June 2024, this collaboration has brought to life the Scottish Buddy Scheme – an initiative designed to connect international students with local volunteers through shared experiences, cultural exchange, and genuine friendship.
From potluck dinners and park visits to museum outings, movie nights, and English language exchanges, the programme has created countless opportunities for People to come together in relaxed, inclusive settings. For students, it’s been a chance to practice English, discover Scottish culture, and ease the loneliness that can come with moving to a new country. For local volunteers, it’s opened doors to new perspectives and friendships.
“Hyndland house is the best place I could have ever wished for. I came to hyndland house 3 years ago and every year gets better, " Raj Anuroop, one of the students shared. “This year I became the sustainability champion and I got to do litter picking, help my neighbours with their gardens and even once I was asked to help her with the shopping. She even gave me a box of chocolates as a thank you gift. I love doing the litter picking because I can be outside helping the environment and also talk to People when I am outside. So many People say thank you to me and that made me feel very special.”

The beauty of the Scottish Buddy Scheme lies in its mutual benefit: international students feel welcomed and supported, while local People gain fresh insights and connections that broaden horizons. Together, they’re helping to build a Community that celebrates inclusivity, understanding, and kindness.
At Places for People, we believe that thriving Communities are built on connections like these. The success of the scheme is a powerful reminder that when People come together – across cultures and Communities – everyone benefits.
