Places for People responds to Andy Burnham MP becoming UK Prime Minister

We strongly support the new Prime Minister’s clear mission for housing, which closely reflects our deep-rooted purpose of increasing the supply of truly affordable homes, raising public standards, and creating thriving, sustainable Communities.   

Since 2024, this Labour Government has laid important foundations through planning reform and increased investment in affordable housing – change we sought and welcomed. But we now need urgent long-term certainty to maintain our momentum and continue to deliver as planned.  

Clarity on Social and Affordable Homes Programme grants in particular is essential, as we plan to build many thousands of homes for social rent by 2036. Our sector needs this confirmation to increase housebuilding, end homelessness and cut state spend on temporary accommodation. 

Partners like PfP know what it takes to unlock more affordable homes, strengthen Communities and drive growth across the country – and we're already working with Government, local leaders and like-minded organisations to build 2,500 homes a year, unlock investment and accelerate delivery.  

Partnership is at the heart of everything we do, and we're showing the way through major infrastructure-led development and regeneration projects, including at Gilston in Hertfordshire and Park Hill in Sheffield.    

We're also already helping to upskill the housing and construction workforce – working with over 50 partners through our PfP Thrive skills movement – to create conditions for success. This mirrors the Prime Minister's recognition of the link between housing, skills and technical education, social mobility and economic opportunity. 

We stand ready to work with the Prime Minister, his Cabinet and Ministers, local leaders and partners to build skills, build homes, and build futures.
