The mental health benefits of walking
Walking is one of the easiest ways to feel better. Just a short stroll outside can help clear your head and lower your stress levels. When you get moving in the fresh air, your body releases natural chemicals that give your mood a lift and help you feel more relaxed.
It’s even better if you walk with a friend or a neighbour. Having a chat while you walk makes the time go faster and helps you feel more connected to the people around you. It’s a great way to turn a simple bit of exercise into a social highlight of your week!
Keeping your heart healthy
Walking is one of the best low-impact exercises out there, making it accessible for almost everyone. It’s a brilliant way to improve your cardiovascular health for free and help you meet the recommended 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.
Whether it’s a 10-minute brisk walk to the shops or a longer wander on the weekend, every step helps strengthen your heart and improve your overall fitness.
Talking about free ways to stay active, why not download the Places Leisure app and have access to tonnes of free health and wellbeing tips all from the comfort of your own home.
Building friendships in your Community
When we spend a lot of time indoors, our world can feel a little small. Getting outside for a walk is a brilliant way to remind yourself that you’re part of a wider Community. It’s not just about the exercise; it’s about the people you meet along the way.
Striking up a conversation with a neighbour or meeting someone new can be the start of a great friendship. Plus, exploring different parts of your local area can be a real treat - you might discover a hidden park or a shortcut you never knew existed!
It’s all about getting out there, meeting friendly faces, and feeling more at home in your local area.
Our partnership with The Ramblers
At Places for People, we want to make it as easy as possible for our Customers to stay active and connected. That’s why we are incredibly proud to be the first housing association to partner with The Ramblers, Britain’s leading walking charity.
In our recent annual Customer survey, many of you told us that you wanted more social activities and health-focused events in your local areas. We’ve listened, and together with The Ramblers, we are launching Wellbeing Walks up and down the country. Check out The Ramblers website to find PfP and other local Wellbeing Walks. https://www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/wellbeing-walks.
