Patricia’s Story: Setting out on her Apprenticeship Journey

This National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2026, we’re proud to shine a light on this year’s theme: Skills for Life.

Because apprenticeships aren’t just about starting careers - they’re about building confidence, unlocking potential and supporting People to grow at every stage of their journey.

Patricia’s story is a powerful example of exactly that.

Having previously worked as a manager in another industry and now working as a team leader in Estates at Places for People, Patricia chose to take on an apprenticeship not to change direction - but to refresh, strengthen and future-proof her skills.

“Quite some time ago I was a manager in a different industry. Since then, things have changed, so for me, it made sense to learn new techniques and refresh my skills within management. I’m essentially keeping my skills and knowledge up to date.”

While apprenticeships are often associated with school leavers, Patricia’s experience highlights something incredibly important, learning and development never stand still.

“I felt I was more of a mature apprentice, and it’s been a long time since I studied, but I’m enjoying it and I’m implementing what I’m learning into my team leader role.

To anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship, I would say go for it! It’s not just for school leavers; anybody can do it!”

For Patricia, the apprenticeship provided something immediately valuable - the tools and techniques needed to lead People effectively.

“I wanted to develop my leadership skills. I know all about the role of cleaning and the standards required, but when you’re leading a team, it’s a different skill set you need. You also need to have the tools and tips to be able to bring the best out of your team.

Team leaders also need to be self-aware and think about how they may be perceived. By being self-aware, you're looking at your own personality and you’re learning how to adapt your style to different people in your team, as everyone responds differently.”

What makes Patricia’s journey particularly powerful is seeing how learning translates into real impact.

“Previously, I’d learnt about the Belbin questionnaire, so I did this with my team in a team meeting. They said it was the best team meeting they’ve had, as it was fun and they learnt something new. They’ve asked if they can have this style of team meeting going forward, as it’s more interactive than just having someone talk to them. It was really encouraging to see that what I’m learning and applying to my role is having a positive impact on my team.”

For Patricia, applying her learning has been both motivating and transformative.

“For me, it’s taking what I’m learning and applying it to my everyday work and then seeing the results.

When we completed the Belbin questionnaire together, it highlighted each Colleague’s strengths and areas for development. I then invited the team to share whether they felt the results were a true reflection of one another, which encouraged open discussion and helped everyone feel comfortable speaking up.

The exercise has helped the team learn more about themselves and each other, better understand our team dynamics, and recognise where everyone fits in. It sparked honest conversations in a safe environment and brought to light potential issues that I can now address.

It’s also kept me motivated, knowing I’m working towards becoming the best team leader I can be for my team.”

Beyond professional skills, the apprenticeship has encouraged reflection and personal growth.

“The apprenticeship has encouraged me to reflect on myself and the kind of team leader I want to be, as well as where I see my future progression. It’s something I wouldn’t have taken the time to do in the past. I’m now far more mindful of how I come across and the impact I have on others in the team.”

And for Patricia, the proudest achievements are measured in People, not qualifications.

“I’m really proud of how the team is bonding and opening up more - they feel comfortable talking to me about anything.

I’ve noticed a positive change in how they respond to me, and I’m now taking more time to get to know each person as an individual. Understanding my team’s strengths and areas for development has helped me allocate work more effectively, as well as identify who’s ready to progress and what support each person needs.”

Her experience reflects the true value of apprenticeships - unlocking both new capabilities and existing strengths.

“Things are always changing, so it’s valuable to keep learning new skills and recognising the strengths you already have - something the apprenticeship really helps with. It also highlights areas for development, giving you the chance to build on them. For example, if there’s a module you’re unsure about, you can take time to learn more and improve your understanding.

Ultimately, it’s been a great opportunity for personal and professional development.”
