Earlier this year, we asked customers to complete a wellbeing survey to help us to understand your wellbeing, personal and community needs. In response to all that our customers told us, we have worked in our communities to prioritise social and support activities across a wide range of areas. See the sections below to find out more about projects going on in your area.

Nationwide

Digital Inclusion Support

If you need some help to get online or use the internet, please contact our Digital and Employability Coordinator. We can help with online tasks, access to training (no prior knowledge needed) and in some cases can help you to access devices and data. Skills and Employability Support

Your Skills and Employability Coordinator is here to offer free one to one advice and support to help you to access training, work, work experience or volunteering. We have many links with training providers and employers. Email skillsemployment@placesforpeople.co.uk or call 07825045138.

Wellbeing Co-ordinator

Our wellbeing co-ordinator can help you with practical advice and access to activities or programmes of support to meet your individual needs for example social or sports activities, or activities and projects to help you to manage your mental health and wellbeing.
We can keep in touch for an agreed period of time to ensure you make good progress against your individual goals. Contact wellbeingmatters@placesforpeople.co.uk or call 07909212550 to arrange an initial chat.

Befriending Service (run by Shape Linc Line)

Our National Befriending Service provides weekly telephone calls to customers. Often it’s just good to have a regular friendly chat but the Shape Link Line volunteers can also help you to find support on a range of practical or wellbeing issues if needed. If you are interested in regular befriending calls please contact wellbeingmatters@placesforpeople.co.uk or text Befriending to 07909212550 and someone will give you a call.

Live Online Training Courses

These courses are run for us by several organisations across the UK. Courses can run on Canvas, an online platform that provides you with information, course materials and support, or on Zoom or Teams. Each session is tutor led and live, so you can interact with tutors and everyone else in the group during the sessions.

Tutor led courses cover all sorts of topics such as digital skills, crafts, mental health awareness and budgeting. Sessions and are regularly updated with more options. To express an interest email inclusion@placesforpeople.co.uk or text Digital to 07825045138 and someone will call you back.


English, Maths & Digital Qualifications

Our partners WEA offer free courses at a variety of levels in English, Maths and Digital including qualifications that are delivered through an online Zoom classroom enabling you to study for a functional skills qualification with full tutor support in the comfort of your own home. You may need to talk to a member of staff and do an initial assessment to make sure the course is right for you.

Beginners 1:1 Digital Support

We have contracted ‘We are Digital’ to offer support for people who are new to getting online. This could be help with setting up a digital device and email address, or how to navigate the internet and build confidence to be independent online. All support is on a 1 to 1 basis, absolute beginners are welcome to sign up. In some cases, we can help with access to equipment.

Places Online Learning

Online learning designed by Places for People to help with subjects such as, Budgeting and Personal Money Management, Noise Matters (which looks at what is “nuisance noise”) and Mental Health and Wellbeing. Email skillsemployment@placesforpeople.co.uk.

Level 1 and 2 qualifications

Are you looking to get the right career qualifications? Working with The Skills Network and other partners, we are able to offer Level 1 & 2 qualifications across a range of areas. To find out what’s on offer and if this is right for you contact our Skills and Employability Coordinator, Ian Cooke. He will be happy to offer tips and advice to help you make the right choice. Hay Avenue Community Hub

Grassroots Clothing Edinburgh.  We provide sensible solutions, by offering free to keep interview clothing to men in need. We've consistently grown since 2015, all thanks to in kind donations of quality new and preloved clothes and support.


Hays Community Pantry

Thistle All Ability Bike Project

Try adaptive bikes with Thistle! Get behind the wheel with a range of specially adapted and engineered bikes.

Join our drop in sessions to test out our bikes, learn more about using them and/or be part of our group cycle!

Fresh Connections

Smart Works Edinburgh

Grassroots Clothing

Hit Squad Decorating Service

This project will target people moving on from homelessness across Edinburgh. The aim is to support 120 people with a volunteer-led decorating service. Remote service is offered if guidelines dictate. Find out more on their website.

 

The Edinburgh Tool Library

The Edinburgh Tool Library promotes the concept of a sharing economy. Working on the same principles as a traditional book library, it encourages local people to share appliances – reducing waste and making access to tools affordable for everyone in the community.
North West

Invest in Youth - Lancashire

Are you 15-24 and out of work? If you’re not in education, employment or training, we can help.  It can feel stressful, confusing and overwhelming trying to get a job or continue your education. Sometimes you just don’t know where to start. Based on your individual interests, we can help you gain new skills to boost your confidence and find your direction. We can help you to sort out the practicalities like finances and access to benefits. When you are ready, we can help you develop and write a CV, then show you how to navigate the jobs market and training options. We will help you to prepare for interviews and even make sure you have suitable clothing and shoes.

Age of Opportunity - Lancashire

Want to get back to work? Over 50?  Sometimes losing your job can lead to a loss in motivation and feelings of isolation. We can provide practical support to help you move forward. Together we can make a plan tailored to your situation, first tackling barriers such as finances and wellbeing. Then we can refresh your CV, focusing on your experience and transferable skills. We can help you find suitable courses if you’d like to update your skills or train for something new or we can help you find a volunteering role to build your confidence by helping others.  When you’re ready to return to work, we can help you search for jobs and apply on line. We’ll help with practice interviews too, so that you know what to expect.

Chorley Youth Zone - Inspire

Chorley Youth Zone, named by young people as ‘Inspire’, is a purpose-built facility for the borough’s young people aged 8 – 19, and up to 25 for those with disabilities. The Youth Zone is open from 4pm until 9pm 5 Monday to Friday. Activities range from football, pool, badminton, basketball, arts and crafts, boxing and many more activities. Smart Works - Women's Employment Support - Manchester

Smartworks believes in the power of clothes and coaching to transform a woman’s confidence when seeking employment, so they provide employment training and support for women wanting to get into work. TLM Centre Monsall - Manchester

Turkey Lane & Monsall Neighbourhood centre is based on the Monsall estate in Manchester and provides a variety of services and activities such as women’s activity groups, family social bingo, drama group, over 50’s group and junior youth club. Yes Manchester Training

Provision of training and employment in North Manchester. The Centre is open Monday to Friday and customers can drop in or book an appointment. The staff will help all customers to improve their employment opportunities and connect them with employers and training opportunities. Plungington Community Cafe - Preston

Plungington community Café is open 6 days a week serving drinks and light lunches. It is host to a variety of social events throughout the week and is an Official Breast Feeding Café, which holds a weekly support group. Tanterton Village Centre - Preston

There are also free reusable period products and digital resource packs available to help girls take part in sport. Free training is available for sports leaders on the emotional and physical barriers girls face, and a network of ‘big sisters’ will provide 1-2-1 support to girls in each area.

Helping customers over 50 to become more active

We are here to help you find exercise activities that you enjoy or to discuss ideas if you aren’t sure.

SIGN UP IT’S FREE!

As well as helping you find a suitable activity or group, we can fund some activities, to give you the chance to try them for FREE as we can fund them.

These include:

  • Up to three months membership at your local leisure centre/swimming pool/gym.
  • Membership cost to join a sports or exercise group
  • Exercise or sports classes for up to 8 weeks.
  • Small weights or exercise equipment to help you exercise at home or outdoors.
  • Exercise footwear and clothes.

If there is interest from others in your neighbourhood, we can fund group exercise sessions for a limited time to get it started! We are open to ideas, zumba, chair based, yoga etc

Make Your Move

The project offers a free 2-month membership at a local leisure facility (subject to availability) which enables you to use their facilities as much as you like. If leisure centres aren’t of interest to you, we are also able to link you with other activities that you are interested in or might like to try, including daily walks with a walking group or running with a local athletics club.

The project is focussed within East Anglia, working closely with Leisure Providers in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. We can work closely with you to find the most accessible and suitable centres for you. This offer is available to all social housing residents, it is not limited to just Cotman Housing tenants.

Service Six 6: Kidz & Youth on the Mews, Wellingborough

Service 6 is a Northamptonshire-based charity committed to changing lives and creating futures for disadvantaged children, young people and their families. They provide a range of services such as therapy and counselling, youth provision, wellbeing support, volunteer opportunities, plus much more. Places for People are supporting the provision of the free Kidz & Youth on the Mews group. Two sessions run weekly; one group is aimed at children aged 5 to 10 years and the other at young people aged 11 to 16. They offer activities for children and young people to get involved in and they will also have the opportunity to shape the sessions and share ideas about activities they would like to see organised for them in future.

SELEP Digital help for job-seekers

We Are Digital working in partnership with South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) to provide FREE basic digital skills to help people get back into work. This includes kit, connectivity and training to all individuals for whom this is a barrier to employment or training.
